Turban shells during the Ama festival. Ama are women who dive for fishing and collecting mainly abalone and turban shells. Ama fishing has been popular in Sugashima since the Manyo Era. Every July 11th, all the Ama of the island participate in the Shirongo festival, to compete for the presentation of the abalone offering to the shrine. The Ama who found a pair of male and female abalone first become the leader of Ama for the year. The pair of abalones are offered to the shrine for good catch.
